During Google’s third quarterly earnings call on Tuesday, CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that a quarter of the company’s coding is done with the help of AI. Pichai commented that 25% of all the new codes are generated via AI, which is further reviewed by the engineers. He stated that the AI’s intervention expedites software engineers to accomplish more and move faster. He also assured the investors that the AI investment by the silicon valley giant is paying off big time. Pichai claimed that the company is uniquely positioned to lead in the era of AI. Google’s “differentiated full-stack approach to AI innovation,” which includes “data centers, chips, and global fiber networks,” all bolstered by AI, is the reason behind his claim. During the recent quarter, the company earned $26.3 billion.

In an earlier interview for 60 Minutes, Sundar Pichai claimed that AI could lead to job losses for several knowledge workers, including writers, software engineers, architects, accountants, and more. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in 2018, Pichai quipped how AI will be more important for humans than fire and electricity. He stated that AI is probably the most important thing humanity has ever worked on; that will help solve the world’s biggest problems and help us make great advances in education, among other utilities. The statement was at the time when the likes of Elon Musk, who had himself invested in making OpenAI, were warning of AI being harmful for humanity at large.
