Apple to Begin iPhone 17 Manufacturing in India, Minimizing Operations In China: Report

Apple is making a notable shift by commencing early manufacturing of the iPhone 17 in India. Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has confirmed that the tech company is undertaking “New Production Introduction” (NPI) work for the upcoming iPhone model at an Indian facility, moving away from the traditional initial production phase in China.

For the unversed, “New Production Introduction” (NPI) refers to the phase where Apple converts a prototype design into a mass production blueprint, crucial for refining manufacturing processes, materials, and designs. Traditionally conducted in China due to its robust supply chain, this time the NPI for the standard iPhone 17 is taking place in India.

Notably, this shift does not extend to the higher-end iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max, or the anticipated iPhone 17 Slim models, which are likely to remain in China for production.

Apple’s decision to increase production in India is part of a broader strategy to diversify its supply chain and reduce reliance on China, its primary manufacturing hub for years. This transition aims to create a more resilient and adaptable supply chain in response to global changes.

Recent reports from industry insiders indicate that Apple plans to incorporate low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels across all four iPhone 17 displays. This includes not only the standard iPhone 17 but also the slimmer variant and the current Pro models. LTPO technology is efficient as it enables displays to adjust their refresh rates according to the content being displayed, enhancing visual smoothness while conserving battery life.

According to a report from MacRumors, analyst Pu suggests that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max could see a significant camera upgrade, featuring a 48MP telephoto rear camera, an improvement over the 12MP telephoto lens on the iPhone 16 Pro models. The front-facing camera on the iPhone 17 Pro series is also expected to be upgraded to 12MP.

Additionally, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are expected to maintain the same screen sizes as their predecessors, with the iPhone 17 Pro featuring a 6.3-inch display and the Pro Max sporting a 6.9-inch display. Both models will reportedly be powered by Apple’s upcoming A19 Pro chip, built using TSMC’s advanced 3nm process for enhanced performance.
