While there are largely unknown companies gifting their employees cars and even homes as Diwali Delight, the rest of us normies will have to settle with the usual fare—dry fruits, soan-papdi, or both. Some of us would be spared the humiliation of the Diwali Bonus altogether, in solidarity with the shambolic economic status of the country in general that brags of Asia’s two richest men and the richest woman, with a combined wealth that is more than what none of us who clicked on this article for memes will ever earn. And that’s okay. There’s no religious decree or government mandate about treating your employee with a Diwali bonanza on the occasion. Festival of lights also means being joyful about the countless little blessings, like receiving salary on time and being a part of the same ol’ oft repeated HR activities that can now be considered as yet another synonym for ‘timeless.’ While you grumble and groan about the Diwali Bonus you deserved, take a moment and reflect on the plight of gig workers and folks that toil without a break or HR activity for a square meal. Think about folks bedridden and in hospice care. Think about folks who may never see their loved one again this Diwali. Think about the kids who will miss their home for the first time away from home. Think about the kid who does not want to go home this Diwali. Think about the person for whom the festival of light brings dark, traumatic memories with each bursting cracker. The list is endless. Light a diya in their lives with whatever best you can afford to; especially by being their for them. Be their Diwali Bonus. Yours will assuredly arrive. Happy Diwali 🪔
